Its Like A Ski Hill | ADHD

I absolutely love the ADHD brain. Although at times it may seem like there is not much there on the surface, its actually incredibly deep and the perception is quite unique!

As our kids are getting older, we continue to teach them about WHY this and that is good for them – food, drinks, sleep etc. However as they get older and we continue to teach them about why, its also important to teach them to BE empowered to make these decisions themselves.

The other evening, after a quite hectic couple of weeks and an incredible weekend celebration, my boy and I were sitting talking and going through some examples of what is good vs “bad” for their bodies and brains. One thing I wanted to be sure to communicate is that as the mom I am not just here to say yes or no, I am here to explain why and empower them to make the choices they need to make that’s right for them.

My son had an incredible example.

When we talked about various foods and drinks, some of which being high in sugar or with white flour, highly processed, preservatives etc. Explaining in a way for a child to understand, he said to me, “so its like a ski hill… you go up the ski lift and if its on the black hills you come down really quickly, but if you are on the other hills you come down more slowly.”

Exactly that. Exactly.

Its far too common for kids to think they are “missing” out when they “cannot” have juice, pop, junk food etc… however are blessed with healthy foods like meats, grains, healthy fats, fruits and veggies.

Our society is somewhat mixed up. A “treat” is not going to a fast food place or buying a chocolate bar filled with sugar and god only knows what else. A treat is something home made and healthy. Someone not just making food for you, but putting their time, energy and heart into it.

We had a big celebration that had a lot of mental and physical work leading up to it, it turned out amazing, however the aftermath for sensitive individuals like my boy and I, it was tough. A lot of people, various foods and drinks. For a child, wanting to “fit in” with their peers even when they aren’t at school.

Im also learning, these two beauties of mine are teaching me that to be the best person I can be means truly standing up and BEING the best person I can be. Show by example. Educate and empower them to make the right choices even when I am not around.

Late nights also add a twist into the equation. This is also a massive factor in our brain and body health. Another thing I am so thankful to be educating and empowering myself on. Sleep = Power. Regardless of who you are or what you want to do.

I realize I am an odd man out. I am “one of those parents” who am finally beginning to stand firm on my beliefs and speak my voice of WHY. Having an amazing child who needs more, whose health relies on these healthy choices and options we can provide. To simply turn a blind eye, is not doing him or our family any favours. But it doesn’t need to be like this, the more parents like me who stand up and demand better for our kids… WE are a part of a massive change happening in the world right now. It may be a small wave right now, however its gaining momentum and I am SO proud to be “one of those parents”!
